The Pre-Session Scaries

June 2026

The Pre-Photo Session scarries… It’s not just for the clients; a photographer can have this same experience, too! I remember when I had my very first photo session. I was excited, nervous, and unsure of where this dream would take me. When envisioning this business, I wanted to create a client experience that was fun, relaxed, and flowed easily. A huge part of that was guiding my clients through posing and prompts that highlighted their unique features and favorite pastimes.

From scrolling Pinterest and gaining inspiration via my favorite photographer friends, I developed a sense for the way I wanted the photos to feel. However, no matter how much research and preparation I did for the sessions I seemed to always draw a blank on what the next prompt or pose should be during a session. Any photographer who is starting out will tell you there is a small internal panic which forms in that moment. I was left anxious and overwhelmed by the mere idea of taking photos of my clients.

It wasn’t until I learned to let my creativity run the session and let go of the perfection mindset that I truly found my place in the photography world. I have realized that moment to moment, I will be able to guide my clients through the experience. In the hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” the writer could not have been more spot on with the lyrics, including the line, “All I have needed, thy hand hath provided.” An often-forgotten wisdom of God, which I have been reminded of often.

Fast forward to now, my approach has changed. I let each session reflect my own creativity and flow. As I move through our time together, I let the ideas run freely, trusting that, in each moment, the Lord will guide my steps. The results? A client-centered, perfectly unique and authentic session that yields beautiful photos time and time again.
