Turning Play time into cherished photographs
July 2026

If you ask any family photographer what the most difficult part of their session is, I’m guessing they would tell you how hard it is to get all the kiddos to smile and pose just right for the photograph. When kids are hot, tired and inevitably grumpy the session can be a total bust. However, there is one thing that I have found that works nearly every time. A simple idea of finding what the child likes to do can save a world of frustration.
In the early planning stages of a family session one of the questions I ask is, “What are some things your child is interested in," and,"Any pointers on what might make them laugh or smile.” I often advise families to make the park one of their photoshoot locations when possible. I have yet to meet a child who doesn’t love to run and play at the park!
Whether it is used as motivation to smile a little longer or the session takes a turn for the slide and monkey bars, the whole family will be much happier overall. Sometimes as a photographer I’m not there to pose and perfectly prompt, but to sit back and observe; capturing the genuine moments just as they are. Give children the time to be little, to be goofy, to have fun. Make the session into one long game of tag, princess twirls and the occasional still shot.
The moment you change your sessions from stiff portraits to active candids, the photographs will be next level. So parents, friends, and fellow photographers… let the kids guide the session, you won’t regret it!
