Choosing the right location

May 15, 2026

“On the road again, I just can’t wait to get on the road again.” I’m sure everyone is familiar with the Willie Nelson song, and the last couple of weeks, this song could not have been more accurate for the Sara Walford Photography business. In my latest travels, I took a drive North to visit Emma & Michael for their engagement pictures.

The trip sure reminded me of my childhood, with rolling green hills and farmland stretching for miles in all directions. Some may say the mileage would get boring quickly. I’m here to report that this couldn’t be further from the truth. The beauty of God’s creation as spring comes around is unmatched. The drive also gave me lots of time to think and listen to my favorite podcasts!

Upon arrival at the family farm, I quickly fell in love with the location, complete with an old Chevy truck and John Deere tractors. This place was more than a backdrop for the couple; each detail had its own story to tell. As a photographer, I believe there is beauty that comes in places that are near and dear to the heart. I can recommend a variety of picture-perfect places, yet none are more important than those that hold the memories that shaped who you are.

So next time you are considering your photo location of choice, remember the places that have already been the backdrop of your life. These are the spaces that your family/friends feel most comfortable and at ease. Even if you think the spot is not at all photogenic, suggest it to your photographer anyway. I promise you will see the difference in the photos!
